100% local and organic: closing the protein gap for poultry in the ICOPP Project Organic Eprints
Nelder, Rebecca; Smith, Jo; Clements, Ruth; Pearce, Bruce.
A key challenge in improving the sustainability of organic poultry production is meeting the required levels of nutrients from locally sourced organic feeds. 100% organic diets for monogastrics will become compulsory in the EU from 1st January 2015. The ICOPP project brings together knowledge, from 10 EU countries, of local feeds for monogastrics and their wider impact on growth, health and welfare and the environment to identify feeding strategies which comply with organic principles. This poster will report on feeding trials carried out with broilers in the UK by FAI and ORC to investigate the impact of algae, peas and lupins on broiler performance and welfare.

100 % organic ration works for organic table birds Organic Eprints
Woodward, Lawrence; O'Brien, Josie.
Poultry researcher Josie O’Brien and Lawrence Woodward present some results from a series of EFRC trials that are questioning the need for the conventional feed derogation in organic poultry production. Currently the use of up to twenty percent of non-organic components is allowed in the feed ration of organically certified table birds. Although this derogation is supposed to be removed in August 2005, there is mounting pressure to allow it to continue in some form. The derogation was introduced due to concerns that without it the bird’s nutritional needs could not be met by certified organic sources alone and therefore their health, welfare and growth would be compromised. The primary concern relates to amino acid levels and in particular methionine....

100%-Biofütterung mit Rapskuchen und heimischen Körnerleguminosen bei der Fütterung von Legehennen verschiedener Herkünfte Organic Eprints
Rahmann, Gerold; Holle, Romana; Andresen, B; Andresen, C.J..
Rations of 100% organic and local origin were tested. Up to 18% of thermally proc-essed rape cake was fed in different rations to two groups of laying hens. Faba beans, Vicia sativa and blue lupines were used as protein supplements to create a feeding ration. High vicine and covicine contents, especially in Vicia sativa, led to a refusal of some food rations. No ration has been found suitable for daily use. Chicken fed with a rape cake ration laid eggs with a positive fatty acid pattern, which is favourable for human diets.

A new method for analysis of plasma carotenoids in poultry Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Teixeira,M.; Meleiro,C.H.A..
A study was carried out to evaluate a new quantitative analytical technique for determination of plasma carotenoids in poultry. Plasma carotenoides were extracted and measured from 30 blood samples of male Cobb broilers. The new technique was efficient in detecting plasma carotenoids of chickens and also showed advantages upon those techniques currently in use such as the form of presentation of results, use of a compatible solvent, and the scanning method for reading. The new technique did not increase the cost of the analysis.

A NOVEL GREEN BIOREFINERY CONCEPT: Protein refining by lactic acid fermentation and biogas production from green biomass Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria.
The extraction of proteins from leaves, integrated in a green biorefinery, may represent an attractive solution to the increasing demand for protein-rich animal feeds while decreasing the dependency on soybean imports. Thereby such green biorefineries could contribute to the development of more self-sufficient and sustainable agricultural systems in Europe. The framework of this PhD study is a green biorefinery concept for the production of protein concentrate, biogas and fertilizer from organic and locally grown green crops like alfalfa, clover or grass. After the screw pressing of the fresh crops, lactic acid fermentation of the green juice with Lactobacillus salivarius BC 1001 was assessed as the key method for the recovery of proteins. A leaf protein...

A Review of Household Poultry Production as a Tool in Poverty Reduction with Focus on Bangladesh and India AgEcon
Dolberg, Frands.
This Working Paper for the South Asia regional hub of the Pro-Poor Livestock Policy Initiative presents the case for using poultry, in very small units of 5-10 adult birds, as a means of alleviating the poverty of rural women in the region. Policies and procedures that affect the success of such initiatives are examined. The author draws on personal experience and an extensive literature review. The main focus of the paper is a review of what is known as the Bangladesh Model. Emphasising that this is not a static model, the author explains its evolution by Bangladesh’'s largest NGO, BRAC, working with the government department responsible for livestock services. The main feature of the model is that the supply of inputs and services are turned into income...

A study tour of organic poultry production in France - current & future implementation of standards & EU legislation Organic Eprints
Anon,.
Introduction There have recently been major changes in the regulations governing the production of organic poultry products in the EU. Member States have been required to set Standards for production that meet the minimum set in Regulation (EC) 1804/99 if products, including poultry, are to be sold as organic within the EU. This has raised concerns over consistency of implementation in other Member States, and whether, directly or through derogation, this might lead to competitive advantage over the UK. MAFF were aware that France had drafted derogations in accordance with Regulation (EC) 1804/99, and intended to implement some aspects of the Regulation which were claimed to be more stringent than the basic requirements. The aim of this project...

In 2003, Brazil was recognized as a pathogenic Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) strain-free country for commercial poultry. This research was conducted in Brazil between December 2003 and March 2005 to verify the maintenance of this virulent NDV-free status. Serum samples from 5,455 flocks for commercial poultry farms were collected, comprising 81,825 broiler chickens. The farms were located in nine states of the country, grouped in three geographic regions. Serological evidence of NDV infection was detected in 28.8% of the surveyed farms. However, all fifteen viruses isolated and identified as Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) were characterized as nonpathogenic strains, based on the Intracerebral Pathogenicity Index. These results showed that Brazil preserves...

Ability of non-linear mixed models to predict growth in laying hens R. Bras. Zootec.
Galeano-Vasco,Luis Fernando; Cerón-Muñoz,Mario Fernando; Narváez-Solarte,William.
In this study, the Von Bertalanffy, Richards, Gompertz, Brody, and Logistics non-linear mixed regression models were compared for their ability to estimate the growth curve in commercial laying hens. Data were obtained from 100 Lohmann LSL layers. The animals were identified and then weighed weekly from day 20 after hatch until they were 553 days of age. All the nonlinear models used were transformed into mixed models by the inclusion of random parameters. Accuracy of the models was determined by the Akaike and Bayesian information criteria (AIC and BIC, respectively), and the correlation values. According to AIC, BIC, and correlation values, the best fit for modeling the growth curve of the birds was obtained with Gompertz, followed by Richards, and then...

Adding more value to added-value. An exploration of consumers’ perceptions and attitudes towards improved animal welfare standards in organic meat production processes Organic Eprints
Marian, Livia; Thøgersen, John.
The expansion of the organic food market and the growing competition are factors that fuel the differentiation of organic food products. Differentiation may be achieved by developing “organic-plus” products that integrate other value-adding characteristics beyond the organic quality. In this context, the aim of this study was to explore whether consumers would notice and value further improvements in the animal welfare standards than those imposed by organic regulation. The results of three focus groups designed as a concept test reveal positive attitudes towards the proposed production process from both regular and occasional organic buyers. The results further indicate that the proposed “organic-plus” products would probably be valued by a niche of...

Adjust of regression models to estimate the rectal temperature of broilers for the first 14 days of life REA
Ponciano,Patrícia F.; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Lima,Renato R. de; Schiassi,Leonardo; Teixeira,Vitor H..
The broiler rectal temperature (t rectal) is one of the most important physiological responses to classify the animal thermal comfort. Therefore, the aim of this study was to adjust regression models in order to predict the rectal temperature (t rectal) of broiler chickens under different thermal conditions based on age (A) and a meteorological variable (air temperature - t air) or a thermal comfort index (temperature and humidity index -THI or black globe humidity index - BGHI) or a physical quantity enthalpy (H). In addition, through the inversion of these models and the expected t rectal intervals for each age, the comfort limits of t air, THI, BGHI and H for the chicks in the heating phase were determined, aiding in the validation of the equations and...

Adjusting weight growth curve of male quails Coturnix japonica reared in the semi-arid region of the State of Pernambuco Animal Sciences
Lucena, Leandro Ricardo Rodrigues de; Holanda, Marco Aurélio Carneiro de; Holanda, Mônica Calixto Ribeiro de; Anjos, Marcelo Lopes dos.
This study adjusted different regression models to describe the growth pattern of meat quails from birth to 42 days of age. Data of 300 male quails were used. Weight and height information of all quails were collected weekly from the 1st to the 42nd day of age. Body weight of poultry was subjected to the polynomial, logistic, Gompertz, Weibull, and log-normal regression models. The criteria used to choose the best model to explain the growth curve of quails were the coefficient of determination of the model, Akaike’s information criterion, sum of squared residuals and Willmott’s index. For all the models used, the variables age and height were significant to explain the weight of quails. The polynomial (R² = 99.99%, AIC = 24.68, SSR = 27.5, d = 0.9999) and...

Age influence on quality of shell and penetration in bacterial laying lightweight eggs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Smaniotto,B.D.; Amarante,A.F.; Altarugio,R.; Silva,I.G.O.; Corrêa,I.M.O.; Pereira,L.Q.; Sartori,M.M.P.; Andreatti Filho,R.L.; Guimarães-Okamoto,P.T.C.; Okamoto,A.S..
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the influence of the bird’s age on the quality of the shell and percentage of bacterial penetration in commercial eggs. White-shelled commercial eggs were used, laid by light laying hens in their first laying cycle at 21, 39, 51, and 62 weeks of age. Shell quality evaluations comprised: egg weight, specific gravity, percentage and thickness of shell, number and size of pores. For evaluations regarding bacterial penetration, strains of several enterobacterias and one salmonella were used, all of which resistant to Nalidixic acid (100µg/ml). The method employed for evaluation of bacterial penetration was filling the eggs with growth medium. The data were subjected to variance analysis with 5% of probability using SAS (Education...
